We also advise our patients on what to do to avoid these tears in the future. Our clinics are located in Springfield, New Bedford, and Fall River, Massachusetts.

.

Symptoms of Ligament Tears

Common symptoms of ligament tears include:

  • Swelling and bruising
  • Inability to move the affected joint
  • Popping sound during the injury

Causes of Ligament Tears

Common causes of ligament tears include:

  • Changing direction suddenly
  • Landing or twisting awkwardly
  • Direct blow to a joint

Treatment for Ligament Tears

Diagnosis is important before the treatment of a ligament injury. Our orthopedic or physical therapist will examine you physically and may request imaging tests such as X-ray, MRI, or arthroscopy. This helps us identify the location of the tear and its severity. We may also ask you questions concerning your medical history.

If you are suffering from a mild ligament tear, you can treat it at home using rest, ice, compression, and elevation therapy.  If you have a moderate tear, you may get healed within a few weeks with a proper treatment plan.

If you have a severe tear, our orthopedic or a physical therapist will develop a treatment plan based on the location and severity of the tear. If the tear is severe, it may take you months before you are completely healed.

Some of the treatment options for ligament tears include:

  • Special exercises
  • Use of medications
  • Diet adjustments

In cases where a person has severe ligament tears, our orthopedic specialist may recommend surgery. Surgery is also an effective option if other treatment methods don’t show promising progress.

It’s important to seek ligament tears immediately you develop signs to avoid complications. If left untreated, these tears may lead to severe pain, limited mobility, and permanent damage to the joint.

Who Are at More Risk for Getting Ligament Tears?

Although anyone can develop ligament tears, they are more common in physically active people, especially athletes. These tears can be prevented by wearing the right footwear, strength training, proper physical techniques, and other practices.
